The Psychological Effects of a Straighter Smile

The Psychological Effects of a Straighter Smile

While most of us know that straightening teeth through the use of orthodontic braces can improve one's appearance, many people don't realize that the result of a straighter smile can also have a positive psychological effect.

Although facial esthetics may not top the orthodontist’s list of reasons for recommending early (Interceptive Phase 1) treatment, it could very well be the main concern of parents seeking early treatment for their children who still have some baby teeth. The key is good communication to identify specific children whose psychological well-being can be improved by early treatment. The difference can be seen in Zoe’s eyes after changing her smile.

Many people with misaligned teeth feel self-conscious about their smiles, which can lead to feelings of lower self-esteem. Some routinely cover their mouths when talking, smiling or laughing and when having their photographs taken because they don't like their smile. Of course, this is not to suggest that physical appearance is everything and that all of life's insecurities will disappear after receiving orthodontic treatment, but it does shine a light on the relationship between self-esteem and a confident smile.

Feeling self-confident and secure can indeed affect one's life on many levels. Students, particularly adolescents, who have improved their smiles with braces often perform better in school, as they tend to feel more confident. The same holds true for working professionals, who often report having much more confidence with straighter teeth.

An attractive smile is a wonderful asset. It helps contribute to better self-esteem, self-confidence and self-image -- all of which are very important to people of all ages.
